For colon cancer, we offer laparoscopic and robotic assisted laparoscopic resections, when appropriate, and routinely participate in an enhanced surgical recovery program at our hospital. This enhanced recovery focuses on better preparation for the surgical procedure, surgical approaches using the latest techniques, shorter hospital stays and quicker return to work and activities.
For thyroid cancers, we routinely use closures that utilize hidden suture techniques leading to minimal scarring and also are able to avoid using drains in most cases.
Melanoma (Skin Cancer)
For melanomas, we offer sentinel node techniques for the evaluation of cancer spread, and we work closely with our colleagues in plastic surgery to ensure the best overall results in healing at the primary excision site.
Some of the technologies we utilize include sentinel lymph node biopsy; minimally invasive surgery techniques for colon resection; and advanced procedures for breast cancers, such as combining a lumpectomy with a breast lift or having immediate reconstruction after mastectomies, which can often be done with skin- and nipple-sparing techniques.
We utilize the SPY, which is a fluorescence imaging technique that uses an infrared laser and a green dye given intravenously. Tissues, such as skin flaps from mastectomies and bowel that will be used for a reconnecting procedure (intestinal anastomosis), can be evaluated to ensure that blood flow is adequate for healing. This helps to avoid complications post-operatively. More detail is offered on each of these techniques in the section for each type of cancer surgery.
